The gift of speaking in tongues is a spiritual gift. It means speaking with words or in a language one doesn’t know in order to edify both oneself and others.

Jesus foretold of speaking in tongues: “And these signs will follow those who believe… they will speak with new tongues.” Mark 16:17. The first time anybody spoke in tongues was on the day of Pentecost, when the Holy Spirit was poured out on the apostles, as related in Acts 2:1-12. The apostles spoke the gospel to the crowds in Jerusalem, and what they said could be understood by people speaking many different languages: “… we hear them speaking in our own tongues the wonderful works of God.” Acts 2:11.

Later Paul also writes about the gift of speaking in tongues, in 1 Corinthians 12 and 14. However, here he writes that the person speaking in tongues doesn’t speak in an understandable language: “no one understands him; however in his spirit he speaks mysteries.” 1 Corinthians 14:2. Yet this gift that has been given to believers can be of benefit to the recipients and used to edify others in Christian gatherings

How to create a fictional language

So you’re working on a sci-fi novel, spec-fic short story religion novel or fantasy novel  and you want to include a made-up language to give your dialogue real intensity? Don’t just inject some gibberish and call it a day. Creating your own fictional language can be a fascinating, effective way to add depth to your story and strengthen your worldbuilding. And it’s a lot of fun!

What is a fictional language?

Unlike English, Cantonese, Spanish, Hindi, and other natural languages that are spoken throughout the real world, fictional languages only exist within an imaginary world, like the fictional setting of a book, TV show, video game, or movie.

People have been creating constructed languages for hundreds of years, but their popularity boomed with the advent of the internet. The descendants of Noah all spoke a single language. As they increased in number and began to spread eastward, they found a fertile area called Shinar and settled there. They decided to build a city with a tower that "reached to the heavens." They wanted the tower to be a proud monument to themselves and a symbol that would keep them united as a powerful people.

However, God was not so pleased. He came down and looked at the city and tower and said,

If as one people speaking the same language they have begun to do this, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them. Come, let us go down and confuse their language so they will not understand each other. (NIV, Genesis 11:6-7)

So God made the people speak many different languages so they could not work together on building the city and tower. The He scattered the people around the world and the city was abandoned. The city was called "Babel" because God confused their languages.

 And in the 12th century, German nun and composer Hildegard von Bingen came up with what she called Lingua Ignota, or “Unknown Language,” for use in her religious songs.
